 Totems and the raid!
« Thread Started on Jan 23, 2009, 8:36am »

Looking over WoW Webstats last night, I realized there's a little overlap in totems Issy and I are dropping -- namely Flametongue Totem, which is the spelldamage totem. I have improved SoE (all three ranks) whenever I'm resto (blame Valinar), so I have improved SoE and improved Flametongue.

For the record, here's what I drop:

When all 25 folks are more or less in range:
* Flametongue Totem
* Stoneskin Totem (Israia usually has SoE down)
* Mana Spring Totem (only benefits my group, but has a significant benefit to me, since it's improved 5/5)
* Wrath of Air Totem

When it's just me and the tank group:
* Flametongue Totem
* Strength of Earth Totem
* Mana Spring Totem
* Windfury Totem

When we're split up by proximity and I've got more casters than melee (but some melee):

* Flametongue Totem
* Strength of Earth Totem
* Mana Spring Totem
* Windfury Totem

Last night during Gluth:

(over by the raid)
* Flametongue Totem
* Mana Spring Totem
* Wrath of Air Totem

(over by the kiters)
* Earthbind Totem

When needed:
* Poison Cleansing Totem (group only)
* Disease Cleansing Totem (group only)
* Nature Resistance Totem
* Mana Tide Totem (sadly, group only)
* Curse Cleansing Totem OH WAIT DAMMIT.

I rarely drop Disease Cleansing Totem during Heigan because I can't guarantee that folks will be in range of it; even when I drop it way out in the front, it seems like it doesn't get everybody. I stick to cleansing by hand.

This is a pretty long-winded way of saying Hey Israia, feel free to drop Magma Totem whenever you want, I have Flametongue covered when we're all in range. ^_^ But I figured it would be useful to mention my primary totem selection just so people know where they stand with this particular shaman.

I think Darindall probably keeps this one covered most of the time?

Since it's activated by his Icy Touch, it may drop if he's disabled from DPSing for a bit at the wrong time. What other sort of options do we have for air totems? <_< I pretty much only know the existence of Windfury.

Pretty sure Wrath of air is the only compelling totem to replace windfury- which is one of the few caster buffs the raid has. :P

Then again, we might want sentry totem if it starts emoting.

This. I want it to look like one of the whirly air elementals, preferably with the black-and-purple graphic. ^_^

Yeah, other than Windfury, there's Wrath of Air, Nature Resist, Grounding (I can't think of anywhere offhand where that would come in handy in Naxx, but am I missing anything?), and of course Sentry. I never thought of Air as being one of the lesser totems, 'cause the good totems are so good, but... they're certainly more situational than, say, the water totems or the fire totems!

I'd personally LOVE WoA like nothing else. I am certain the other casters feel the same way. <3

No worries, Alonora, it's up most of the time. ^_^ It's only on the occasional fight like the Thane section of Horsemen where I trade it in for Windfury. (SPELLHASTE NOM NOM NOM. :D)

I hadn't actually noticed Mana Spring is still group only. I assume we try to put people with mana bars in with Teu? I hadn't really noticed.

Generally, because of the buffs my totems give, I really don't care what goes down. You'd be surprised how often your Flametongue doesn't reach me- I actually had a mod tracking it one night, and during boss fights I only was getting it 13% of my combat time.

During trash, now that Magma is worth a damn I drop it.

As for air totems, there's always Nature Resistence totem. Better than nothing?

I always drop the same 4 totems for every fight, unless its trash(fire turns Magma):
Mana Spring(Not dropped on trash or really mobile fights)
Strength of Earth
Flametongue
Windfury

And really, I can't make the raid that much more effective otherwise. As Tarq pointed out, sometimes our DK isn't around for one reason or another- and even 5 or 10 seconds of no WF turns into a gigantic drop in damage(I'd be a bigger fan of him dropping Icy Talons, if not for the fact that it helps his soloing so much). My talents make Howl of Winter less useful. We don't have a Blood DK or Marksmanship Hunter, so I can't spec out of Unleashed Rage(lt alone for my own soloing), and Flametongue helps Mac too, and it may even affect Tarq/Denne's poisons(unsure) or Darin's spells.

Its a bit of overlap, but it guarantees extra damage that won't ever fade.

Yes and no. Problem is, none of our mana users are running out these days... like ever.

"Mana as a commodity" my ass.

This is a good point. In the 25 man it's really rare for me to have mana trouble. It's something I'll definitely want to keep in mind if I ever have a shaman in one of my guild's 10 mans though.

We recently killed Kel'thuzad (10 man) without a replenishment provider and the difference was pretty stark. We certainly missed it. It wasn't enough to make it not a one-shot, but we also had 3 innervates to call upon and our paladin (Airyanna) has a bottomless pool of mana.

I still do. The change to JoW certainly helped this last patch, but some fights (especially patchwerk) Im could quite happily consume a second pot.

Go jump in the river and tell the healers to pump you up! I mean, its not like they've got a ton going on.
